Josh and Zach both made the Beeville Senior Youth Football team. Several of Zach's baseball all-star buddies ended up on the junior team. They had a very successfull season; going undefeated right up until the championship game when Gregory Portland beat us 21-7 (the same score we beat them by in regular season). It is frustrating to have the best win-loss record in the league and still end up in second place but the boys took it pretty well.

Zach didn't get much playing time this year. Joshua was a defensive starter on the line. He and Zach sometimes traded out in the last quarter of the game.

Joshua's team, the Major Devil Rays, had a disappointing season (Cathi says it was the coaching) but thanks to Zach's pitching, the Minor Rangers won the league championship. As manager of the 1st place team, I was selected to coach the Beeville Minor All-Star team - I'm sure to the chagrin of the Beeville coaches and parents.

In the game against Orange Grove, pitcher [Zach] Petrus held the visitors in check into the late innings with the home town team leading by the end of the fourth inning by the score of 8-1. Orange Grove picked up three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but Beeville produced six runs of their own in the top of the sixth to push the score to 14-4. The final score was 14-6 as only two runs came in during the bottom of the sixth. -- Beeville Bee-Picayune

Beeville starter and winner Zach Petrus held the Mathis team down in the top of the third. Beeville pushed across three runs in the bottom of the inning on one hit by Jordan Gonzales, a fileder's choice and four walks to take a 3-0 lead entering the fourth. Petrus and his teammates got the Mathis club out in order over the next two innings and looked to be in control of the game going into the top of th sixth, still up 3-0. The sixth inning proved to be somewhat more troublesome as the visitors used a leadoff single, a hit batsman, a two-run double and a walk to tie the game at 3 all going into the bottom of the sixth with Beeville needing one more run to win. The leadoff hitter in the sixth, Ted Christensen, reached first with a single and scored after the Mathis pitcher gave up three walks in the inning to push across the winning run for Beeville. -- Beeville Bee-Picayune

 

Little League was hectic for us this year. Zachary played on the Skidmore Minor League team while Joshua was drafted up to the Majors. I didn't make the cut for managing Joshua's team, so I volunteered to manage Zach's. The good news is that they let me change the team name from "Astros" to the "Rangers." Joshua is pretty jealous.

Zach and teammates took 1st place in the Minor Division.

Josh and Zachary are playing for the "Heat" in the Beeville youth basketball league. They are in the 10 & under division and are being coached by Ricardo Munoz. All games will be played at the Beeville Boys club. Their game schedule is as follows:

Zach gets the "most improved" award this season. He scored at least 8 points in our last game to beat help beat St. Phillips.

 

Matt's not currently ranked (as of 2/19/01) on the PRCA web site, but I like to check in every once in a while to see if he is listed in the World Standings - Calf Roping.

Three boys from the Skidmore Astros made the Beevile Minor B All-Stars. Josh and Zach both made it along with their friend Ricky Gutierrez.

Our first All-Star game against Gregory Portland only went 3 innings. GP scored 7 runs in the first inning and it all went downhill from there. The game ended with the score 26 to 0. Our guys just couldn't get it together. They made fielding errors throughout the game and were unable to hit. To make matters worse, Josh and Zach sat on the bench for the first 2 innings and the game only went 3 innings. I have to give Joshua credit though. He was talking to the other kids from the dugout; trying to get them into the game. When the 3rd inning finally rolled around they put Joshua at first base and Zach in center field. Zach had a chance at catching a fly ball but his "glove got in the way." Joshua batted only once, got a base hit, and made it all the way to 3rd before the game ended. Poor Zach didn't get to bat at all.

Our second game against Aransas Pass went quite a bit better. Zach caught a fly ball in left field and Joshua tagged a kid out at home to end the game.

We lost the game against Mathis in the first inning on multiple fielding errors. Mathis beat us 10-0 with 8 of the runs scored in the first innings. Our boys gave us an encore performance of the first inning of the Gregory Portland game with multiple errors in the infield. They were pretty much demoralized after that and couldn't get anything together for the rest of the game. Joshua hit a double and Zach walked (and was immediately caught off base at 1st).
